There are a lot of opportunities to get involved with ASIS&T coming up in the next two weeks.
- ASIS&T @ Pratt Secretary / Treasurer
The biggest opportunity has a deadline coming up fast: those interested in becoming Secretary / Treasurer should email me at dturner [at] pratt [dot] edu by this Friday, September 25. The position entails helping us keep track of fundraising & budgets, applying for our funding from Pratt & ASIS&T, and keeping minutes at our monthly general meetings. Just drop a note to say hi and that you’re interested, and either give some background information on what qualities make you uniquely qualified, or let us know why you’re interested in getting involved in our organization in general. We’ll post information about the candidates to our site, and an election will be held Monday, October 5.
- Pratt Fall Fest
ASIS&T will be hosting a table at the Pratt Fall Fest on the Engineering Lawn at Pratt Brooklyn from 4 – 7pm on September 25. We’ll be there to tell students (outside of the SILS program!) why information science matters to them, and why they should get involved with our organization.
- Objectified Screening in Brooklyn
A free screening of Objectified will be held at Memorial Hall on Thursday, October 1 at 6pm. Director Gary Hustwit, who also directed Helvetica (which we watched back in April!) will be on hand to introduce the film and take questions afterward. This is a film about “our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them.”
Librarian Swarm on Union Square
As a celebration of Banned Books Week and freedom of information in general, ASIS&T is proud to support SILSSA’s Librarian Swarm gathering in Union Square on Saturday, October 3 from 1 – 3pm. Librarians and other information-lovers will gather to raise the public awareness of the importance of free access to all kinds of information, with their favorite challenged (read: banned) books or other materials in hand.
- First First Monday Film Screening!
On the heels of an information-freedom-filled weekend, ASIS&T will be screening the film Rip! A Remix Manifesto at 9pm on Monday, October 5 in PMC room 610. As always, refreshments (probably pizza, but we are open to new cuisines!) will be served to those attending.
Also happening on Monday, October 5: election for the position of ASIS&T Secretary / Treasurer! We’ll work to get a secured link to an online polling service running for those who do not have Monday classes and cannot attend. Remember: if you are interested in this position, email Diana before September 25!
